Autism Kingston

Autism Kingston - The neural development disorder labeled autism is often characterized by impaired communication, social interaction and by repetitive and restricted behavior. These characteristics would often become present before the child reaching the age of three.

Autism affects the way the nerve cells and their synapses organize and connect and this affects the way information is processed in the brain. How and why this happens is not greatly understood. There are 3 known disorders within the autism spectrum: Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified, which is usually abbreviated as PDD-NOS, and Asperger Syndrome. Asperger Syndrome lacks delays in cognitive and language development. PDD-NOS are diagnosed when the full set of criteria for Asperger Syndrome or autism are not met.

Genetics seem to be strongly linked with autism. The genetics of autism have proven to be rather complicated and it is not clear whether certain cases of autism are explained by rare mutations in the genes or by rare combinations of common genetic variants. In various cases, autism is strongly associated with agents that lead to birth defects. There have been debates surrounding proposed environmental causes including heavy metals and pesticides. At one point there was concern about childhood vaccines however this hypotheses is biologically implausible and lacks substantial scientific evidence.

Statistics place the prevalence of autism at approximately 1 to 2 people for each 1000 people across the world. Within the USA, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that approximately 9 out of one thousand kids are diagnosed with a form of autism. Ever since the 1980s the number of individuals diagnosed has significantly increased. This could be partly due to the changes in diagnostic procedures. It is hard to determine if the actual prevalence has increased.

Parents will often begin to notice indications of autism within the initial 2 years of their child`s life. The indications will gradually develop, while several children would initially develop more normally and next they regress. Early cognitive intervention or behavioural therapy can help autistic kids gain social skills, communication skills and self-care.

There have been several instances where kids have recovered, though there is no known treatment. Several individuals believe that changes to the food intake and the avoidances of some environmental chemicals and additives will help to cure this particular condition. The majority of kids with autism do not live independently once they reach adulthood, but some have become successful.

Characteristics

Some symptoms appear around 6 months of age and then become more established by age 2 or 3, and could continue into adulthood. Autism is characterized by a triad of indications consisting of: restricted interests, communication impairments, impairments in social interaction, and repetitive behavior.

Through the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the city remained an essential Great Lakes port and the center for locomotive manufacturing and shipbuilding. And even until today, due to its strategic site at the head of the St. Lawrence River and at the mouth of the Cataraqui River beside the border with the United States, Kingston is an essential spot of vital military importance.
